  1. And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them,
  2. Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
  3. And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day: for it was now eventide.
  4. Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand.
  5. And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes,
  1. The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people.
  2. They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.
  3. They seized Peter and John, and because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day.
  4. But many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand.
  5. The next day the rulers, elders and teachers of the law met in Jerusalem.

  1. And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.
  2. And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?
  3. Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,
  4. If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole;
  5. Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
  1. Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and the other men of the high priest's family.
  2. They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: "By what power or what name did you do this?"
  3. Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: "Rulers and elders of the people!
  4. If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed,
  5. then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.

  1. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.
  2. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
  3. Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.
  4. And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.
  5. But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,
  1. He is "'the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone.'
  2. Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."
  3. When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.
  4. But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say.
  5. So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together.

  1. Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it.
  2. But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name.
  3. And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.
  4. But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.
  5. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.
  1. "What are we going to do with these men?" they asked. "Everybody living in Jerusalem knows they have done an outstanding miracle, and we cannot deny it.
  2. But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn these men to speak no longer to anyone in this name."
  3. Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
  4. But Peter and John replied, "Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's sight to obey you rather than God.
  5. For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard."

  3. And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them.
